BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/ bcr-2013-202781 DESCRIPTION Occurrence of hypoglossal nerve palsy (HNP) accompanied with other cranial nerve palsies is not an uncommon finding. However, isolated HNP is a rare finding and represents a diagnostic challenge. Awoman in her late 70 s was referred to the neurology department due to sudden onset of dysarthria. She had right breast cancer in 2003 and underwent mastectomy, local radiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy for regional metastasis. On neurological examination her tongue was hemiatrophy and deviated to the left side. The rest of the neurological examination was unremarkable. Brain MRI showed a subtle enhancing lesion involving the left occipital condyle with the destruction of the petrous apex and clivus (figure 1A). The supraclavicular lymph node biopsy showed a metastatic adenocarcinoma (clinically breast ductal carcinoma). In another case, a woman in her mid 60 s visited a hospital due to sudden onset of dysarthria. Medical history was unremarkable. Neurological examination showed atrophy with left-sided tongue deviation. Brain MRI revealed an enhancing lesion involving the left occipital condyle and clivus (figure 1B). The biopsy of regional enlarged lymph node showed the poorly differentiated metastatic squamous cell carcinoma. The hypoglossal nerve is a pure motor nerve responsible for the motor supply to the tongue. Vascular, inflammatory, traumatic or spaceoccupying lesions can affect the hypoglossal nerve anywhere in its course. 2 Isolated HNP is a rare finding because of its proximity to other important anatomical structures throughout its pathway. HNP, when isolated, may be the first sign of a serious underlying disease and a neoplastic aetiology should be excluded. 3

Prosodic Influences on Chinese Tongue Twisters ∗

A diversity of structural alternations enriches tongue twisters, in form of a language game speakers consider intriguing while reciting. However, none of efforts are put into the interval between twister constituents. This study is an attempt to give a complimentary view to Chinese tongue twisters. The twister effects are actually affected both by unstable lexical structures and limited space b...

Inducing speech errors in dysarthria using tongue twisters.

Although tongue twisters have been widely use to study speech production in healthy speakers, few studies have employed this methodology for individuals with speech impairment. The present study compared tongue twister errors produced by adults with dysarthria and age-matched healthy controls. Eight speakers (four female, four male; mean age = 54.5 years) with spastic (mixed-spastic) dysarthria...

PHONOLOGICAL TO ARTICULATORY CASCADE 1 Running Head: PHONOLOGICAL TO ARTICULATORY CASCADE Cascading Activation From Phonological Planning to Articulatory Processes: Evidence from Tongue Twisters

Research into spoken word production has often focused on the interaction of lexical selection processes and phonological planning. Less attention has been given to the relationship between phonological planning and articulatory processes. The current study considers evidence from the tongue twister paradigm to investigate such potential interactions. Acoustic analyses of various parameters of ...

Twisting tongues and memories: Explorations of the relationship between language production and verbal working memory.

Many accounts of working memory posit specialized storage mechanisms for the maintenance of serial order. We explore an alternative, that maintenance is achieved through temporary activation in the language production architecture. Four experiments examined the extent to which the phonological similarity effect can be explained as a sublexical speech error. Phonologically similar nonword stimul...

Quantifying ultrasound data from a tongue twister experiment using curve-to-curve distance

This study examined the production of four-word tongue twisters (e.g. top cap cop tab) by six English participants using ultrasound imaging of the tongue. Onset consonant closures for /t, d, k, ɡ/ in the contexts of /a/ and /æ/ were extracted from the video and traced using EdgeTrak software. Traces were analyzed using a mean minimum point-to-point distance measure between curves [12]. Curves w...
